What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic body contouring surgery that is performed to reduce stubborn fat in localized areas of the face and body. This is performed by making small incisions in the skin near the problem areas, and inserting a thin tube (cannula) into the underlying layer of fat. This cannula is then carefully maneuvered to break apart the target fat cells and suction them out of the body using a surgical vacuum connected at the other end.

Dr. West and Dr. Burke perform tumescent liposuction, which uses local anesthesia to decrease discomfort associated with the procedure, helps achieve optimal results, and reduces overall recovery time compared to traditional liposuction.

What Is Bodytite Radio-Frequency Assisted Lipolysis?

BodyTitePRO is a breakthrough in body contouring, and uses RFAL (Radio-Frequency Assisted Lipolysis) technology to address some of the shortcomings associated with traditional liposuction. Bodytite utilizes RFAL to melt fat in stubborn areas and enhance your liposuction results by adding the benefit of significant skin tightening. We now offer Bodytite to our patients at the Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery due to its superior, long lasting results.

BodyTite PRO is a great solution for individuals who are looking to reduce fat without the saggy, wrinkly skin. It also helps improve skin laxity after weight loss or due to aging. BodyTite PRO is a safe, gentle and effective minimally invasive procedure, helping you sculpt your body into its ultimate shape. Dr. West and Dr. Burke will listen to your concerns and analyze your current condition to determine if Bodytite is a good liposuction option for you.

Liposuction Benefits

Liposuction can be used to reduce unwanted fat that you have struggled to get rid of despite your efforts to eat healthy and get plenty of exercise. It can be used to target specific problem areas, such as the:

  • Face
  • Chin (i.e., a double chin)
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Abdomen
  • Hips (i.e., love handles or a muffin top)
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks

Once the fat cells are removed from the body, they are gone for good. However, this does not mean that you will no longer gain weight. It is important to continue to take good care of your body by eating a nutritious diet and getting regular exercise in order to maintain long-lasting benefits and avoid gaining fat.

Tumescent liposuction, Bodytite Radio-Frequency Assisted Liposuction and Smartlipo at Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery offer gentler liposuction procedures and a shorter recovery period than traditional liposuction.

Ideal Candidates for Liposuction

Liposuction can be an effective fat reduction option for you if you are struggling with localized areas of unwanted fat, but are within 30 percent of your goal weight. It is important to realize that although this procedure is performed to help get rid of stubborn fat, it is not a replacement for a diet and exercise or to be used as a solution for obesity. However, when paired with a healthy lifestyle, liposuction can help you reach your goal of a slimmer, healthier figure and maintain long-lasting results.

Because liposuction does not specifically address skin laxity, it is also important that you have good, firm skin quality and a healthy build. In some cases, Bodytite skin tightening will be recommended to maximize your results. In more advanced cases of excess skin, a skin tightening procedure like a tummy tuck may need to be combined with liposuction in order to avoid loose or hanging areas of the skin after the fat is removed.

We believe it is important that you have already tried to get rid of your unwanted fat naturally with healthy lifestyle habits before considering liposuction. When used correctly and performed with the care and attention of Dr. West and Dr. Burke, liposuction can be a truly rewarding procedure with life-long benefits.

Combining Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck in order to address excess abdominal skin in addition to unwanted fat. Dr. West and Dr. Burke may recommend this combination of body contouring procedures to patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, but now struggle with loose abdominal skin in addition to the last bit of hard-to-lose fat. Performing these procedures together allows for a slimmer and smoother contouring of the body.

Both procedures are also extremely common as part of a mommy makeover, which addresses the various changes women experience during pregnancy and after childbirth.

What to Expect from Liposuction Surgery

Your liposuction procedure will be performed by Dr. West or Dr. Burke and will be customized based on your unique goals and circumstances. Tumescent anesthesia solution will be used for your liposuction procedure, which allows for an often shorter and easier recovery period. Your procedure will either be performed at our on-site AAAHC-accredited surgical suite, or at a nearby surgery center.

The specific details and procedure steps will be covered with you during your consultation, at which point you will have the opportunity to ask any additional questions or address any concerns you may have regarding liposuction.

Liposuction Recovery and Follow Up

Your recovery period will vary based on your specific circumstances, the amount of fat removed, the area treated, and the method of liposuction used for your procedure. Once your surgery is complete, Dr. West or Dr. Burke will apply any necessary dressing, which might include a compression garment to help manage swelling and assist with healing. You will be able to return home shortly after your liposuction procedure under the care of a loved one.

Incision lines will gradually fade and flatten over time. Given their smaller size, they are often hardly noticeable when fully healed. Dr. West or Dr. Burke will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure optimal liposuction results.

Liposuction Results

Depending on your treated area and the amount of fat removed, it can take up to a few months for swelling to completely fade to notice the final results of your liposuction procedure. As your body continues to heal, you will notice a slimmer, smoother contouring of the treated area. With Bodytite, you will experience skin tightening over the course of 4-6 months. With Smartlipo, you might also experience a subtle tightening of the surrounding skin.

The results of your liposuction with Dr. West or Dr. Burke will be customized to you in order to appear as though you have lost the weight on your own.

Liposuction is designed to provide long-lasting results when paired with a healthy lifestyle. The fat cells that are removed during liposuction are gone for good, but it is still possible to gain weight.

The Cost of Liposuction

The cost of your liposuction surgery will vary based on several factors including the type of liposuction method used for your procedure (Bodytite RFAL or Smartlipo). You will be provided with a detailed estimate for your liposuction based on the various items discussed during your consultation. At this time, we will also be more than happy to discuss the different payment and financing options available at Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery.

What Is Smartlipo?

At Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we also offer patients the benefits of Smartlipo.

Smartlipo is a form of laser-assisted lipolysis, or laser liposuction, which uses a laser fiber at the end of the cannula. When inserted into the target areas of underlying fat, thermal energy is emitted directly to the problem fat cells, causing the fat to melt for gentler removal from the body. This thermal energy also offers the added benefit of tightening the surrounding tissue, helping to further slim the body’s overall shape.
