A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a body contouring procedure that helps to create a slimmer, firmer body shape by addressing loose abdominal skin and small amounts of excess fat, as well as weakness or separation of the underlying muscles. A full tummy tuck is performed using a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen, as well as a possible second incision made around the belly button. The underlying muscles are repaired and excess skin is removed, creating a slimmer contour of the abdomen.
A mini tummy tuck requires a smaller incision and features a shorter recovery period than a full tummy tuck. Dr. West may recommend this procedure if the majority of skin sagging is occurring in the lower abdomen.
Tummy tuck surgery is an incredibly rewarding body contouring procedure. It can help to:
- Reduce excess abdominal skin
- Remove small amounts of excess fat
- Repair the underlying abdominal wall
In some cases, a tummy tuck can be combined with complementary procedures such as liposuction to reduce larger amounts of stubborn fat, or post-bariatric body contouring options to tighten loose skin in other areas of the body.
Patients may consider abdominoplasty for a variety of reasons. During your consultation, Dr. West will listen carefully to your concerns and analyze the condition of your body to determine if a tummy tuck is right for you. Ideal candidates should be generally in good health and at a stable weight before considering tummy tuck surgery.
Women who have undergone one or more pregnancies often experience stretching of the lower abdomen and muscles. A tummy tuck can help remove the outstretched skin and strengthen the abdominal wall, providing a flatter, natural-looking contour of the midsection. This procedure is often performed as part of a mommy makeover with Dr. West, which is customized to meet the needs of each patient depending on how her body has been affected by pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
Those who have lost a large amount of weight and are left with areas of loose, excess skin are also good candidates for a tummy tuck. Oftentimes when losing a massive amount of weight, the skin lacks the necessary elasticity to bounce back to the body’s slimmer shape. Dr. West can help to trim away the excess abdominal skin and reduce small amounts of stubborn fat to provide you with the slimmer, healthy-looking figure you’ve worked hard to achieve. Other common body contouring procedures such as an arm lift or liposuction may be performed together with a tummy tuck to help address loose skin or unwanted fat in other areas of the body.
A tummy tuck may also be a good option if the skin around your abdomen has lost elasticity with age and you would like to achieve a firmer, more youthful contour.
The tummy tuck is a procedure that is commonly performed in combination with other surgeries to achieve dramatic body transformations. Depending on your goals and concerns, Dr. West may recommend one of the following options:
Mommy Makeover: Because the tummy tuck is commonly performed for women who have undergone one or more pregnancies, it is often performed as part of a complete mommy makeover. Dr. West performs customized mommy makeover procedures to help women address the various changes their body has experienced due to pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Most mommy makeovers feature a combination of body contouring and breast enhancement surgeries.
Liposuction: In some cases, liposuction may be used in combination with a tummy tuck in order to address surrounding areas of stubborn fat. Combining your tummy tuck with liposuction can help to achieve a slimmer and more natural-looking contour for your body.
Post-Bariatric Body Contouring: Patients who have lost a large amount of weight, whether by traditional methods or bariatric surgery, often are left with areas of loose excess skin. While a tummy tuck can help address the abdominal region, other surgeries will be needed to tighten skin in other areas of the body (such as the lower body, arms, etc.). The right combination will depend on your specific condition and goal outcome.
Your procedure will be performed by Dr. West at a nearby surgery center or hospital. Prior to your surgery, Dr. West will answer any questions and address any concerns you may have about tummy tuck surgery during your consultation. She will then work closely with you, considering your goals and specific condition to create a personalized surgery plan.
During surgery, Dr. West will make a low horizontal incision extending roughly from hip bone to hip bone. A second incision may also be made around the belly button. If you are undergoing a mini tummy tuck, your surgery will feature a smaller incision.
Dr. West will then carefully lift the skin in order to repair any outstretching or separation of the underlying muscles that can be caused during pregnancy or weight gain. Excess skin is then removed and tightened for a natural-looking appearance. Dr. West will then place any necessary dressings or drains, as well as a compression garment to be worn over the treated area.
Tummy tuck surgery will require several weeks of recovery. If surgical drains were used for your surgery, these are typically removed 10-14 days after your surgery. Dr. West will schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.
In most cases, you should expect to take 2-3 weeks off from work while you get plenty of rest. You will be able to resume limited activity and light cardio at about three weeks, and full activity at roughly six weeks. Recovery times following a mini tummy tuck are generally shorter.
The results of your tummy tuck procedure will be immediately noticeable, however, it will take some time for the bruising and swelling to completely subside. Incision lines will fade and flatten over time, and while some visible scarring will remain, it can easily be hidden beneath your underwear or bathing suit.
As your body fully heals, your midsection will appear slimmer and flatter with a tighter, younger-looking contouring of your skin. Dr. West’s tummy tuck patients are often thrilled with their new body shape and experience a significant boost in self-confidence. Patients generally feel much more comfortable in all their favorite clothes, and cannot wait to try on new outfits, bikinis, or lingerie that they had previously avoided.
Dr. West believes that the tummy tuck is one of the most life-changing procedures because of how it can give a person their body back after life events like pregnancy or massive weight loss. The results are incredibly natural and provide life-long benefits.
The cost of your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery will vary based on several factors, including the method used for your procedure (ie: full vs. mini tummy tuck). You will be provided with a detailed estimate for your tummy tuck based on the various items discussed during your consultation. At this time, we will also be more than happy to discuss the different payment and financing options available at Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery.
